The Way of the Raukura – Film Screening Added to Taranaki Heritage Month 2025

Taranaki Heritage Month is proud to announce a special bonus event that deepens our collective remembrance and celebration of Parihaka’s legacy. On Tuesday, 5th November, following the midday Parihaka Day Commemorative Service at Taranaki Cathedral Church of St Mary, the community is invited to a film screening of the acclaimed musical production The Way of the Raukura.

This powerful musical, co-created by Steve Worsley and Sarah Tahere, dramatizes the events surrounding the 1881 invasion of Parihaka, weaving together historical narrative, soulful music, and the enduring message of peaceful resistance. ‘The Way of the Raukura follows the fortunes of two historical characters (Samuel Crombie Brown and Wiremu Hiroki) who come to Parihaka just prior to the invasion, providing the audience with both a Pākehā and Māori perspective on the profound and unique qualities of the Parihaka community.

Instead of the expected bloodbath, some very different actions ensued….actions that revealed the heart of a very special Māori community. Actions that reverberated across the world and down through history’s pages. Actions that speak hope amidst the wounds of racial division and suffering in today’s world.

The screening offers a poignant continuation of the commemorative service, inviting reflection, dialogue, and renewed commitment to the values of peace and justice. It is a moment to gather, remember, and honour the legacy of Tohu Kākahi, Te Whiti o Rongomai, and all who stood for nonviolent resistance.

This event is presented in collaboration with Heritage Taranaki and the Taranaki Cathedral, with the blessing of the Parihaka community.

Several members of the cast will be in attendance.
