Aotearoa New Zealand Mataī (Prumnopitys taxifolia)

A large NZ endemic tree growing to a maximum height of about 30m, and which can live for more than 1000 years.

Has a distinctive divaricating juvenile phase, with the green adult foliage emerging later. Female trees produce purple-black berries eaten by Kereru. Mature trees have an attractive and distinctive ‘hammer marked’ bark.

The hard timber of this tree was used extensively in New Zealand for flooring during the mid-20th century.

These plants are grown locally in Ngāmotu New Plymouth and have been donated to Heritage Taranaki to help support our mission of conserving our region’s unique heritage.
