Description
Aotearoa New Zealand native Tawa (Beilschmiedia tawa).
A large and attractive native tree up to 30 metres or more in height. Occurs naturally in native forest throughout both the North and upper South Islands.
Smooth bark with attractive willowy green leaves that are and paler underneath. Small inconspicuous flowers followed by large dark red/plum coloured fruit loved by Kereru.
These are fantastic trees for ecological restoration projects (especially for planting beneath established forest canopies) and are an underutilised specimen tree.
Prefer a fertile soil and a sheltered position when young.
Current height approx 0.4m above PB3 planter bag.
These plants are grown locally in Ngāmotu New Plymouth and have been donated to Heritage Taranaki to help support our mission of conserving our region’s unique heritage.
